What Is Somatic Therapy?
Somatic therapy is a body-based approach to healing that recognizes the deep connection between our thoughts, emotions, physical sensations, and nervous system.
Many people use the term “somatic therapy” to mean different things. For me, it's an integrative approach that honors both your mind and your body. We might work with breath, movement, body sensations, and nervous system awareness, while also including traditional talk therapy and cognitive processing.
Bottom-Up and Top-Down Healing
Sometimes we talk about “bottom-up” processing, which means working through the body and nervous system rather than focusing primarily on the story or intellectual understanding. This can offer another way to explore and work with patterns that show up in the body.
I also incorporate “top-down” approaches, such as cognitive processing and traditional talk therapy. By combining both body-based and cognitive approaches, we can make room for deeper self-understanding and meaningful change.
What Somatic Therapy Can Look Like With Me
Each person's experience is unique, and the approach we use will be tailored to where you are in your healing journey. Depending on your needs and goals, sessions may include:
Breathwork
Using the breath to support relaxation, regulation, and increased awareness.
Gentle Movement
Exploring movement in ways that feel supportive and accessible to you.
Body Awareness
Noticing and making space for physical sensations, emotions, and nervous system signals.
Cognitive Processing
Bringing in reflection, insight, and meaning-making when helpful.
Nervous System Support
Learning tools to help you feel more grounded, resilient, and connected.
